Where to Park in Charlestown...
Limited 2-hour parking on Main and Warren Streets.

Off Street Parking Available near Bunker Hill Street and Hayes Square: St. Catherine of Siena Parish, located in Hayes Square on Bunker Hill Street, has approximately 33 parking spaces for lease. According to information they supplied, the lot is located directly behind the Church with an entrance off Corey Street. Parking can be on a 24/7 basis. Preference will be given to those leasing the spaces in their entirety or in a reasonable number. Contact St. Catherine's Rectory at 242-1750 for more information.

Main Street in Charlestown was the first "Main Street" in the USA.

The First Thanksgiving Proclamation (June 20, 1676) On June 20, 1676, the governing council of Charlestown, Massachusetts, held a meeting to determine how best to express thanks for the good fortune that had seen their community securely established. By unamimous vote they instructed Edward Rawson, the clerk, to proclaim June 29 as a day of thanksgiving, our first.

Elizabeth Foster Vergoose, a.k.a. "Mother Goose," is buried in the nearby Granary Burying Ground. She is honored in Charlestown's City Square Park

John Harvard, an assistant pastor of the First Church of Charlestown, left 1/2 his money and his collection of classical and theological literature to a new school in nearby Cambridge. Three years later, in 1639, the school was renamed Harvard College.

Samuel F.B. Morse was born in Charlestown in 1791. He invented the electric telegraph and Morse code.

Nathaniel Gorham was born in Charlestown and lived right near City Square. He also died in the city. He served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Senate during the Revolutionary War and was President of the Continental Congress in 1786. He signed the US Constitution in 1787.

Charlestown is the home of HP Hood, one of the largest branded dairy operators in the United States. Founded in 1846 by Harvey Perley Hood, the company is over 150 years old and is New England’s leading dairy processor.
