In 1989 he was elected President and Chairman, serving in that capacity for two years. He is responsible for designing the original organizational structure which is still in place today and for setting up the volunteer screening program. SuperShag Dance Studio Comes to Charlestown

SuperShag Studio owner Chris Johnston, an internationally-recognized figure in the world of competitive Latin and ballroom dancing, literally brought his business home when he opened his Navy Yard studio in January. With the well-established success of the Waltham Mega Dance Complex under his belt, Chris wanted to open a second Boston studio—but for this one he wanted a location with city-center appeal. Moving from his Back Bay home last year led him right to the spot. Finding the waterside location, building services, and Ian Schrager styling of his new Parris Landing triplex suited him perfectly, he jumped at the chance to purchase commercial space there for his new studio.

Ballroom and Latin dancing at SuperShag is not your grandmother’s ballroom dancing. Chris’s unique vision for 21st C. ballroom and Latin dancing might be summarized as “world-class technique served up with an urban night-life twist.” While during the week students and teachers work to perfect their skills to competition-winning levels, as likely as not on weekends these same dance skills are transformed into high-octane partying to music mixed in signature SuperShag style.

Born and raised in Northern Ireland, Chris’s competitive dancing career got off to a rapid start when he won the adult-level Irish national Latin championships at the age of 15, the youngest person ever to do so. He moved to Liverpool for better access to coaching by top dancers in “International-style,” known for its athleticism and precision. This propelled Chris to a world-class dancing career, including winning national Latin championships in several countries, such as the U. S. championships at the age of 21. Years of rigorous competitive dancing and dance training, not to mention physical training with the Finnish Olympic team, is the impeccable underpinning for the extraordinary results Chris currently achieves in Pro-Am “American-style” competition dancing.

Envisioning a business opportunity more expansive than the 1990’s British “dancesport” arena, it took a personal move to America for Chris to start developing his concept of ballroom and Latin dancing into a lifestyle business along the lines of a “late-night ‘movable feast’ to new classics in dance music.” Discovering that the quality of American social dancing was much higher than in England—since Americans have traditionally viewed it as a social, rather than athletic activity—Chris recognized that America, and better yet, Boston with its youthful population, was the ideal home-base for his business concept. And thus, SuperShag Productions was born

Chris’s third studio in the Boston area, the new Charlestown studio takes the SuperShag vision—and the party—to the next level. Another happy collaboration of Chris and Artisan Builders, the new space is not your grandmother’s pink-and-white ballroom, either. With exposed brick walls evoking the building’s origins as a factory for ship’s boilers, to structural columns-turned-sculpture paved in tiny lights like diamond jewelry, to a killer sound-system custom-designed for the studio by Sonovo, the industrial-glitz ambience shouts out SuperShag.

Nearly ten years after its inception, the SuperShag party has grown dramatically in scale and offerings. Not content that social dancing be limited to dance studios, every Saturday night SuperShag serves up at Ryles Jazz Club in Cambridge a dance experience recalling the classic era when partner dancing in night clubs was the centerpiece of American social life. The 2006 opening of a SuperShag studio in Las Vegas took the concept directly to the world capital of entertainment glamour. Top competitions in America and Europe not only seek SuperShag’s participation for the quality of its students, but savvy organizers also hire SuperShag to run, with its signature flair, their VIP closing parties in such far-flung locales as London, Helsinki, Barcelona, Liverpool, Las Vegas, and New York:

Initially fueled by Chris’ own personal energy and zest for training and partying to the highest standards, over the past decade SuperShag itself has developed an identity that attracts a body of clients and business relationships who gladly embrace a lifestyle that is simultaneously energizing, glamorous, and contemporary. SuperShag’s innovative approach has influenced the dance business not only across the U. S. but in Europe as well, where they are only beginning to see the opportunity to expand “dancesport” into something bigger. When all is said and done, the essence of SuperShag has a deep and ageless appeal that is well beyond a traditional “dance studio.” Although the clientele is primarily young professionals, whatever biological age they may be, after getting top results at national competitions, SuperShag students continue to party on into the wee hours. Somewhere in the SuperShag experience there seems to be a secret formula for being forever young.
