THE CBA ANNUAL MEETING UPDATE - HOW THE CITY OF BOSTON'S DEPARTMENT OF NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOPMENT CAN HELP YOUR BUSINESS.

This year's Annual Meeting's featured speaker was Andre Porter, Deputy Director of the Office of Neighborhood Development within the Department of Neighborhood Development (DND) for the City of Boston.

Andre came to talk to over 35 CBA Members at the Residence Inn Marriott on January 24th, 2007. He gave an overview of many services the city provides to help local businesses, which, in turn helps to revitalize a business area like Charlestown.

Many examples where these types of programs have been successful were cited; including other areas of Boston, such as the North End and West Roxbury.

Some of the services in which the City could assist Charlestown Businesses include: grants and loans to overhaul storefronts, graphic design and signage services, logo and business design services, helping with finances and bookkeeping and small business loans that are too small for banks to be interested in.

To find out more about how the City of Boston, Department of Neighborhood Development can help your business, please contact Andre and the Department of Neighborhood Services. 617-635-0615 or aporter.dnd@cityofbos.gov. The Charlestown Business Climate Committee is currently working with the DND to conduct surveys of how they can help revitalize the business community in Charlestown. We encourage businesses to fill out the survey and become involved. So far the survey has only had 20 respondents, of the 800 businesses in Charlestown.

Using the data collected from these surveys, the Committee will then develop an action plan for 2007.

(Pictured our Marriott Hosts Melanie Pappas and Anthony Moreschi) Anyone interested in participating in the Committee should get in touch with Committee Chair Lynne Levesque.

Dear Charlestown Business Owner:

Mayor Thomas M. Menino is asking for your assistance as he prepares to expand and improve City services for Boston-based businesses, with the launch of Boston Business Solutions – a new, one-stop office to support and advocate for Boston-based businesses. BBS will bring together the financing, site location, and workforce development resources currently available through various City agencies.

In addition to the Mayor’s efforts, the Charlestown Business Association, in cooperation with the Charlestown Neighborhood Council, has established the Charlestown Business Climate Committee (“CBCC”) to work with the City of Boston to attract, retain, and help grow Charlestown businesses. This attached business survey is thus designed to help the CBCC obtain a demographic picture of the Charlestown business community and a better understanding of its needs and challenges. The information from the survey will be used in conjunction with a survey of residents to define an action plan to address gaps and opportunities and thus build a more vibrant business community in Charlestown.

Your help is needed to make sure that the expanded offerings and information requested reflect the challenges and opportunities Charlestown businesses face today. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation in this important effort.
