September Kick-off Meeting Weds. September 26th, Zelma Lacey House

Our September Kick-off Networking event will be held at Zelma Lacey House Wednesday September 26th at 5:30 pm in the June Rielly Center (far left of building).

Warren Prescott/CBA Holiday Sale

This year the CBA has partnered again with the Warren Prescott School to present the 2007 Warren Prescott School /CBA Holiday Sale.

Charlestown and other local artisans and distributors will distribute their products for sale on Saturday, November 17, 2007 from 12:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Warren-Prescott School. The Warren-Prescott School is located at 50 School Street. The Holiday Shopping Event will be held in the cafeteria which can also be accessed on Pearl Street.

"This is our way to help local businesses and artisans boost their Christmas sales, and allow other local businesses to promote themselves to Charlestown residents and businesses at the same time," said Karl Hoyt, CBA Chair. "It also allows us to help the community with all money being donated to the local school."

Refreshments will be available for purchase. All money raised through the Holiday Shopping Event will benefit the Warren-Prescott School, a public school serving grades K through 8. So, get ready to kick-off the 2007 Holiday Season with an afternoon of shopping.

In addition to finding some great gifts for the people on your list, you will be supporting Charlestown business owners and the Warren-Prescott School.

Surveys Being Undertaken to Improve Retail Business in Charlestown

The Business Climate Improvement Committee in conjunction with the Charlestown Business Association has recently completed the latest step in their efforts to attract and retain more businesses in Charlestown.

With funding provided by Boston City Councilor Sal LaMattina, the Committee commissioned FinePoint Consultants to conduct a business district study. FinePoint reviewed the status of Charlestown's business district, contrasted it with comparable districts in Boston, drew a picture of the demographics of our residents, and made several recommendations. The final report and its recommendations are under review by the Committee. (Highlights of the report, however, will be presented at the September 26th CBA event, so come hear more about it!)

The demographic study follows a very successful Open Market, held in June, 2007, with over twenty businesses participating, and a business survey, undertaken earlier in 2007 to identify the concerns of existing businesses in Charlestown.

Coming soon is a residents' survey, which will be an opportunity for the community to give input as to what their concerns and needs are in regard to shopping and services in our community.

With the completion of these surveys, the Business Climate Improvement Committee will present the results to the Charlestown community via a town forum, tentatively scheduled for November of 2007.

MEMBER NEWS, ANNOUNCEMENTS AND EVENTS

Theatre on Fire presents "Gasping" at the Charlestown Working Theatre

You are invited to the Charlestown Working Theatre to see the U.S. Premiere of “Gasping” by Ben Elton at CWT. “Gasping” is a brilliantly funny satire on big business, the media and product exploitation. When Lockheart Industries begins selling designer air, this Perrier for the nostrils becomes the marketing phenomenon of the decade and millions are quickly made. But people start hoarding for a rainy day and oxygen supplies run low. The Third World is plundered, creating a greater divide between the haves and have-nots. Soon the world starts gasping and only the biggest suckers survive!

It opens on October 19 and runs for 3 weekends. Full price tickets are $15-20, but there is a special group rate for Charlestown-based groups: bring at least 10 people and it’s just $10 each for any show. In addition, for groups of 15 or more, Theatre on Fire will be happy to arrange a special private talkback with the cast after the show. For more information

Health Insurance Benefits offered to CBA Members

After much research into benefits for the self-employed, the NASE (The National Association for the Self-Employed) can offer small business owners access to health and business benefits among many other benefits. The NASE was started in 1981 as an organization that offers support, benefits and consolidated buying power. Today, the NASE is over 200,000 members strong, and is the largest nonprofit, nonpartisan association of its kind. The NASE works hard to ensure that Congress consider issues important to the members, with a full time advocacy team located in Washington D.C.

Through the NASE membership, we are able to benefit in many ways like large corporations by banding together to have power in numbers. This has primarily affected the small business owner by offering access to tax savings programs and affordable health insurance among many other discount programs.

The NASE's No. 1 most requested benefit is access to health coverage. Securing affordable health coverage is a top priority for micro-business owners. This coverage is underwritten by The MEGA Life & Health Insurance Company* The health insurance plans can be enhanced with optional benefits and are designed for the self-employed. These plans also provide NASE Members with some valuable features. First, you have the freedom to see any doctor and go to any hospital, without network restrictions. There are many options to choose from including dental, vision, prescription and disability.

Janis P. Bellack Named President of MGH Institute of Health Professions

National search taps Boston health professions leader to lead 800 student graduate school Boston, MA: Following an extensive nationwide search, Janis P. Bellack, PhD, RN, FAAN, has been named the next President of the MGH Institute of Health Professions, an independent graduate school and academic affiliate of the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Bellack, previously Vice President for Academic Affairs/Provost and Professor of Nursing and Health Sciences at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, is a widely published and nationally recognized health professions leader with extensive experience as a federally-funded investigator.

Dr. Bellack will assume her post at the beginning of the new academic year in September. As President of the MGH Institute, Bellack will also hold an academic appointment as John Hilton Knowles Professor. She arrives on campus just as the MGH Institute significantly expands its existing Graduate Program in Nursing with the introduction of a Doctor of Nursing Practice and an Accelerated BSN. Degree and certificate programs are also offered in physical therapy, speech-language pathology, clinical investigation and medical imaging.

While her early career focused on nursing education, Dr. Bellack has been responsible for leading and shaping health professions education across a range of disciplines for more than a decade. Since 1997 she has been a senior consultant and core faculty team member for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Executive Nurse Fellows Program based at the University of California, San Francisco, Center for the Health Professions. She has been a Senior Fellow at the Center since 1996.

Dr. Bellack is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and was a member of the national advisory committee of the Robert Wood Johnson-funded Partnerships for Quality Education Program from 1999 - 2006. During her thirteen year tenure at the Medical University of South Carolina, she was an effective advocate of interdisciplinary education, and promoted interdisciplinary primary care education as a consultant to the South Carolina Area Health Education Center. She has been associate editor of the Journal of Nursing Education since 1998.

"Dr. Bellack's national reputation as a collaborative program builder and as a recognized leader in helping to shape health professions education, makes her the ideal choice to lead the MGH Institute," said MGH Institute board of trustees chair George E. Thibault, MD, Vice President of Clinical Affairs for Partners HealthCare System, and Daniel D. Federman Professor of Medicine and Medical Education at Harvard Medical School. Bellack will succeed Ann W. Caldwell, who announced last September that she would step down this year after ten years as president of the MGH Institute.

Dr. Bellack earned her PhD in Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation from the University of Kentucky, a master's degree in pediatric nursing from the University of Florida. She began her nursing education at the University of Virginia, graduating from the school's last diploma class, followed by a BSN two years later. Earlier this month, the UVA nursing alumni association named her the recipient of its 2007 Distinguished Alumna Award. The University of Kentucky named Bellack to its Alumni Hall of Fame in 2002.

Dr. Thibault chaired the presidential search committee which was comprised of several MGH Institute trustees, with additional members representing the faculty, administration, alumni, and Partners HealthCare: Andrew Dwyer '00, Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Research Coordinator, Reproductive Endocrine Unit, Massachusetts General Hospital; Jeanette Ives Erickson, Senior Vice President for Patient Care Services and Chief Nurse Executive, Massachusetts General Hospital; Julia L. Greenstein, President, Life Science Advisers, LLC; John V. Guttag, Dugald C. Jackson Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Charles Haynes, Associate Professor, Graduate Program in Communication Sciences and Disorders; Mairead Hickey, Senior Vice President for Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer, Brigham & Women's Hospital; Matina Horner, President Emerita, Radcliffe College; Mary Knab, Clinical Assistant Professor, Graduate Programs in Physical Therapy; Carolyn Locke, Director of Student Affairs; and Sara Sievers, Senior Program Officer, Developing Country Advocacy, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The MGH Institute of Health Professions (www.mghihp.edu), an academic affiliate of Massachusetts General Hospital, is an innovative and independent graduate school that operates within the framework of Partners HealthCare System. A progressive leader in developing comprehensive models of health care education, the MGH Institute prepares advanced practice professionals for careers in the fields of nursing, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, medical imaging (radiologic technology) and clinical investigation through a distinctive combination of academic study, clinical practice and research. An average of nearly 800 students are enrolled in graduate level and certificate programs, with an increasing number of courses available
